Ali Imran 102:
An Nisa 1:
Al Ahzab 70-71:
Amma baâdu
All praise to Allah, who created human, life and the universe. I bear witness that there is none to be worshipped than Allah, One, with no partners. He sent His Messenger Muhammad (s) with Islam as a guidance and way of life.
Dear Jamaah rahimakumullah.
Let us strive to increase our taqwa to Allah s.w.t., just like we try our best to increase our skill in programming, language, hobby, any other hardskill. Just like we try our best to increase our knowledge about economy, politics, theoretical in our field. Just like how we increase those, lets us increase our taqwa to Allah swt. in the same manner how we planned for those target carefully.
Today, I would like to speak about Ramadhan, which will be coming soon. Maybe most of us already know the importance of ramadhan, shaum Ramadhan, and the benefit that we will received from Allah with this. There are 3 points I want to share about this.
The first one is, what is our reaction when we know that Ramadhan will be coming soon, earlier this year? Please answer this honestly in your heart. Iâll give you 5 second. Okay done. Probably there are two kind of response. The first one is Alhamdulillah. This is a good moment for me to increase my taqwa to Allah swt. hope I could give my best for this Ramadhan. Something like that. The second is âastagfirullah.. oh my god, I am not ready, Ramadhan Y U come too early? Y U come at summer which have longest day and short night? i have exam this july, I have master presentation, I have doctoral presentation, I have any other reasonâŚâ something like that.
For those who response in number one, Alhamdulillah. At least, this time our Iman is in good condition. so, for those in this category, you can go to point no 2 that I will explain after this. For those in category second (which is not really happy), let us istigfar. Maybe this time our Iman is not in good condition. donât worry, as long as we truly regret our condition and we want to become a better muslim, hope Allah will forgive us and flip our heart into taqwa person, which ready to face Ramadhan.
Because in hadist [Narrated by Tabarani], Rasulullah saw says, âRamadan has come to you. (It is) a month of blessing, in which Allah covers you with blessing, for He sends down Mercy, decreases sins and answers prayers. In it, Allah looks at your competition (in good deeds), and boasts about you to His angels. So show Allah goodness from yourselves, and for the unfortunate one/person is he who is deprived in (this month) of the mercy of Allah, the Mighty, the Exalted.â
Beloved Jemaah rahimakumullah,
After our response is positive to face Ramadhan, the second point is Preparation Principle. Our final goal is not only happy to meet Ramadhan then suddenly tomorrow is Ramadhan and we are not preparing anything. It is not wise for a student like us to face exam/presentation/project meeting without any preparation. How could we have a goal but we donât make a proper preparation to achieve it? There are no such successful person that success without any preparation.
Allah teach us in Qurâan At Taubah 46:
And if they had intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it [some] preparation. But Allah disliked their being sent, so He kept them back, and they were told, “Remain [behind] with those who remain.”
Allah told us in those ayat that if you are intended to go forth (jihad), you would have prepared for it. Simple logic. Clear enough. Just like Allah also teach us to prepare for die, anytime.
We still have 3 weeks now, lets prepare our Ramadhan.
My brothers rahimakumullah,
Point number 3 is the preparation itself, deciding goal and target to achieve. The goal of shaum is taqwa!
O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious/righteous)
The goal is taqwa. How to achieve it in a specific way? To achieve it, Allah explain the characteristic of taqwa, which is (one of them is) explain in Q.S. Al Anfaal 29.
O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allah, He will grant you Furqan/criterion [(to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. making a way for you to get out from every difficulty)], and remove from you your misdeeds/sins, and forgive you. and Allah is the Owner of the Great Bounty.
There are 3 characteristics:
- Yajâallakum Furqoona
- Wayukaffir ankum sayyiatikum
- Wayagfirlakum
The first is furqoon. Actually it is very long to explain about how to be granted furqoon from Allah, but in short, scholars agree that the ways is we have to increase our knowledge (Al âilmu) about islam. Our purpose of life is ibadah to Allah, to do that, we must have faith (super short meaning of taqwa) to Allah and to have it: by Al âilmu. Â So to become taqwa, let us increase our knowledge about islam in this Ramadhan, in every aspect. We could start from the meaning of syahadatain, about shalat, why Allah want us to do shalat, how is the right way to do shalat, etc, about zakat, shaum, hajj, aqidah, sirah, etc. make some target that after this Ramadhan we want to added some knowledge about islam. Hope by doing this, Allah increase our knowledge and ability to furqoon and become taqwa.
The second is Allah remove our misdeeds. Wayukaffir ankum sayyiatikum could be achieved by improving our âamal âibadah. We are not a perfect human, so we always done misdeeds, but by increasing our âamal, then Allah will always bring us always get closed to goodeeds. In this Ramadhan, we could do it by doing more effort on shalat sunnah, recite qurâan, etc. in more condusive time, it should be more easier to us increasing our âamal.
The third is forgiveness from Allah. This can be done by doing istigfar. The best moment to do istigfar is at the time of sahur (before fajr). This can be seen from Q.S. Ali Imran 17:
(They are) those who are patient ones, those who are true (in Faith, words, and deeds), and obedient with sincere devotion in worship to Allah. Those who spend [give the Zakat and alms in the Way of Allah] and those who pray and beg Allah’s Pardon in the last hours of the night.
The most important fact from this ayat is that all the terminology such as shobirin, shodiqin,, is all in the shape of noun. The scholars said that this mean all this deed is not just done in once or twice, or ever been doing this. But this shape means it already become a habit of that person. Thatâs why, those who have made it until become habits, they are the one who really have taqwa to Allah. That why this explain very much about why Rasulullah, who is the most taqwa person, still doing âibadah and ask for forgiveness from Allah, because, not only He is really grateful to Allah but also its already a habit of taqwa person. In this Ramadhan, we could make this a habit by istigfar at the time after sahur and before fajr, and make it our habit so that we could become taqwa.
Allah already explain how to become taqwa, and hope that in this Ramadhan, we could maximize all our âamal and become more taqwa more better muslim. Aamiin ya rabbal âalamin
Aqulu qauli haadza wastagfirullahali walakum.

Khutbah 2
Alhamdulillahilladzi arsala rosulahu bil huda wadinil haq,
liyudzhirohu âaladdini kullihi wakafa billahi syahida,
asyhadu alla ilaha illahu wahdahu laa syarika lahu,
wa asyhadu anna Muhammadan Abduhu warosuluh,
Allahumma sholli ala Muhammad waâala alihi washohbihi ajmaâin.
amma baâdu
Dear Jamaah jumâah rahimakumullah
In this second khutbah, I just want to simply summarized the first khutbah. Let us face Ramadhan with happy heart, welcoming them, not feeling pressurized from them. And after that, seriously considering about preparation to face it. And the last, defining our goal and target. The goal is already clear and to achieve that is also already mentioned. What we need to do is, for example, make a list of book of islam to increase our knowledge, make a list of âamal sunnah that we want to increase, and start making istigfar (dzikrullah) as our habit before fajr so that we could achieve our goal to become taqwa person.
As addition, from hadist Al Bukhari:
âEvery action of the son of Adam is given manifold reward, each good deed receiving then times its like, up to seven hundred times. Allah the Most High said, âExcept for fasting, for it is for Me and I will give recompense for it, he leaves off his desires and his food for Me.â for the fasting person there are two times of joy; a time when he breaks his fast and a time of joy when he meets his Lord, and the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the smell of musk.â
As we could see, it is a kind of romantic love story that we could grow in ramadhan. Shaum is special action that the reward is directly from Allah SWT, because we already leave halal thing (eat, drink) only because of Allah SWT.
Letâs make our own love story with Allah this Ramadhan, because we donât know whether we could meet again with Ramadhan next years.
May Allah s.w.t. bless us and our families with taufiq and inayah so that we will be able to meet Ramadhan and giving our best effort for it. Amin Ya Rabbal Alamin.
Lets make dua:
